Why is my washing machine leaking from the bottom?

What it usually is

  1. The drain pump or its hose clamps

    Leaks during drain and spin point at the pump body, its seal, or the internal hose clamps around it. On front-loaders the pump lives behind the lower access panel.

  2. A degraded door boot (front-loaders)

    The rubber bellows around the door tears or grows a fold of grime that channels water out mid-wash. Inspect the folds with the drum empty — tears hide at the bottom.

  3. Fill hoses and their washers at the back

    Leaks while filling, or a wet trail down the back panel, implicate the supply connections. Rubber washers in the hose ends flatten with age; hoses themselves have a service life.

  4. Oversudsing pushing water past seals

    Too much detergent — the chronic condition of HE machines — foams past the tub seals and out the bottom, imitating a mechanical leak. Suds residue at the leak trail is the tell.

What you can check yourself

Run a short cycle and watch: note the exact phase the puddle starts. Check fill-hose connections hand-tight plus a quarter turn. Inspect the boot folds. Run a hot empty cycle with no detergent — if no leak, dose detergent by the machine manual, not the cap. Clean the pump filter (front lower panel) — a coin in the filter housing causes more leaks than most failed parts.

Pump and boot replacements are moderate jobs — parts are inexpensive, access is the labor. Water near motors and electronics also argues for a look before the next full load. Persistent leaks on a machine past ten years meet the repair-vs-replace math quickly.
