Why won't my oven heat up?
Electric ovens fail at the glowing parts, gas ovens fail at the parts that prove things are safe to light. Both leave a machine that looks alive — lights, clock, fan — but never gets hot, and both have one usual suspect apiece.
What it usually is

A burned-out bake element (electric)
The lower element should glow evenly orange. Blistered, split or dark sections — or no glow at all — end the diagnosis. It is also among the least expensive, most-replaced appliance parts in existence.

A weak igniter (gas)
The glow igniter must draw enough current to open the gas valve; an aging one glows forever without ever letting gas flow. Glow-but-no-flame beyond 90 seconds is the classic gas-oven failure.

A drifted or failed temperature sensor
The thin probe on the back wall tells the control when to cycle; drifted resistance bakes everything wrong or aborts heating with an error code.

Hidden thermal fuse or control fault
Some models fuse the heating circuit after an overheat (often a self-clean cycle — famous for this); the oven simply never heats until it is replaced.
What you can check yourself
Electric: watch the element through preheat for even glow — breaker off, two screws, two spade connectors to swap one. Gas: watch for glow then flame within about a minute. Either: note any error code, and test with an oven thermometer rather than trusting the display. Skip self-clean on an aging oven; it is the great fuse-blower.

Igniters, sensors and fuses are quick professional swaps with the right part number. Control-board faults and gas-side work beyond the igniter belong with a technician on principle.
