Why won't my dryer dry clothes?

A dryer that tumbles warm but leaves clothes damp is almost always an airflow machine failing at airflow: heat with nowhere to go and moisture with no way out. The duct run matters more than the heating element, and it is also the fire-safety item.

What it usually is

  1. A lint-choked exhaust duct

    Beyond the lint screen, the duct to the outside packs with lint over the years. Long cycles, hot laundry-room air, and a barely-fluttering outside flap are the signature — and lint against a heat source is the leading dryer fire cause.

  2. The lint screen sealed by softener film

    Dryer sheets glaze the screen with an invisible film; water pools on it instead of passing. The test: run water on the screen — beading means film.

  3. A failed heating element or thermal fuse

    No heat at all (tumbles cold) points at the element, its coils, or the thermal fuse that a previous overheat — usually duct-caused — blew to protect the machine.

  4. Crushed transition hose behind the machine

    The flexible connector crushes when the dryer gets pushed back against the wall, throttling airflow overnight. Foil accordion hose is a downgrade in disguise; smooth rigid duct breathes.

What you can check yourself

Wash the lint screen with soap and a brush. Pull the dryer out, detach the transition hose, vacuum it and the wall duct as far as reachable, and check the outside vent flap opens during a run. Replace crushed foil hose with semi-rigid. A cold-tumbling dryer after these steps has an electrical fault, not an airflow one.
