Why is my water not getting hot enough?

What it usually is

  1. A failed lower element or thermostat (electric)

    Electric tanks heat with two elements; when the lower one dies you get a short burst of hot from the top of the tank and then lukewarm. The pattern — brief hot, fast fade — is diagnostic.

  2. Sediment displacing hot-water volume

    Inches of sediment mean a 50-gallon tank storing 40 gallons and insulating the burner from the water at the same time. Rumbling alongside the shortage confirms it.

  3. A dip tube that broke off

    The dip tube delivers cold water to the bottom; when it snaps, cold pours in at the top and dilutes the outgoing hot immediately. Sudden lukewarm-everywhere on an older tank fits this.

  4. A crossover at a fixture blending in cold

    A failed single-handle cartridge or a mis-plumbed connection lets cold push into the hot line. Test: close the cold valve at the heater briefly — if hot taps still flow, water is sneaking across somewhere.

Check the thermostat setting (120°F is the standard), then run the timing test: how many minutes of hot at one tap? Short-then-fade suggests an element; instant lukewarm suggests dip tube or crossover. Flush sediment if the tank rumbles.
